Paper 1:
Question 1:
4 simple point
Can quote from extract
Do not infer, just right the point
Spend a couple of minutes
Question 2:
What language features does the writer use?
Most importantly, right about the effect of the feature (e.g. sense of
mystery/fear/happiness/tension)
One word analysis
Spend 10 minutes on this question (2 paragraphs)
Question 3:
What structural features does the writer use?
Don’t write about what is happening; write about where it’s happening in the text
and why!
E.g. perspective shifts, cyclical structure, zooming in and out, flashbacks, dialogue
Describe their EFFECT
Don’t need to use quotations
Spend 10 minutes (2 paragraphs)
Question 4:
Time to re-read the text
Evaluating ideas in the source (the statement said by the student) and the methods
used to convey them
You can write about ANYTHING!
You must relate your answer to the statement at all times and explain how they
writer does it

Spend 25 minutes (3 paragraphs)
Question 5:
Descriptive writing
E.g. personification, metaphors, similes, SEMANTIC FIELDS, punctuation, vocabulary,
paragraphs length
