Male reproductive system: function – produce sperm + secrete testosterone




1. Scrotum:
Functions:
 Acts as a temp regulator (+-350C) = necessary for formation of fertile sperm.
 Houses + protects testes

2. Testes:
Functions:
 Produces sperm ( germinal epithelium) + testosterone (interstitial cells)

3. Germinal epithelium
Function: allow for meiosis: produces sperm

4. Seminiferous tubules:
Function: holds the germinal epithelium that produces the sperm cells

5. Epididymis:
Functions:
 Immature sperm mature to become motile/ fertile
 Immature sperm are stored for several months
6. Sperm duct (vas deferens):

, Function:
 pushes mature sperm forward by strong peristaltic waves from epididymis -
urethra – ejaculation.

7. Urethra:
Function:
 duct - transportation semen/ urine.

8. Prostate Gland:
Function:
 Secretes a fluid aids the transport of the sperm + contains enzymes make sperm
more active (Makes up a third of the semen)

Seminal vesicle:
 Function: secretes seminal fluid containing enzymes/ nutrients.

9. Penis:
 Function: Deposits sperm into the female’s vagina during copulation.

10. Foreskin:
Function: to protect the tip of the penis/maintaining its sensitivity.

Differences:
- Semen: from sperm duct + accessory glands
Sperm: from testes
- Erection: stiffening of penis
Ejaculation: expulsion of semen

Female reproductive system: function – produce eggs, secrete female hormones,
sustain developing foetus
