Unit 29 Assignment 2

Bananas
Grown and picked on farms in columbia -> transported via boats to the UK -> ripening started in
ripening chambers -> sent to stores, unpacked and shelved

Tesco sources their bananas from farms in Columbia, where they are picked whilst still green,
so they are not ripened. About 47 million bananas are transported to the UK on one ship,
where they are stored at a controlled temperature of 13 ᣞ to prevent them from ripening, this
stage is known as the bananas being ‘asleep’. Once they get to the UK, the bananas are quickly
sent to ripening chambers for 5-7 days where they are force-ripened at a controlled
temperature, ethylene gas is used to kickstart and control this ripening. The bananas are sent to
retailers before they are fully ripened, so consumers can buy them and ripen them fully at
home to prevent food waste. Tesco uses auto-alert systems for products such as bananas,
where if a banana hasn't gone through the check out within a certain amount of time an alert is
sent so employees can make sure there are bananas still on shelves, this helps them to make
sure stock is kept up.

Strawberries
Grown and picked on farms in britain -> packaged and transported to retailers -> unpacked and
shelved -> consumer

Strawberries are the number one selling product in Tesco and so they have to keep on top of
stock. Strawberries are grown and picked in british farms for up to 7 months of the year thanks
to the strawberry season being extended from 6 weeks to 7 months by farmers. The
strawberries are bred to be sweeter, firmer and last longer. They are transported to retailers
within a few days where they are unpacked and shelved. The supply chain of strawberries only
takes a few days, because they don't last long once picked. Tesco have a computer which can
predict the buying habits of customers based on the weather and dates, this is usually very
accurate and can help Tesco to ensure they will no under or over stock, for example in warmer
weather more strawberries are likely to be bought.

Tescos is a supermarket and their supply chain may differ from other retailers in length and
methods, such as a clothing store. For example, Primark has a much longer supply chain process
than Tesco, with Primark’s being a few months VS Tesco’s few weeks / days. Primark have to
predict a fashion trend a few months ahead of time, design the product and have it
