CONTEXT AND SETTING
-The victorian gentleman had to be very respectable and uphold standards, he
had to be rich, have a good education, manners, speech and clothing. He had to
maintain his reputation at all costs. And everyone was very prudish.
-To be a physician or anything was manual labour was not gentlemanly
-There was lots of severe poverty, with the slums being crowded and outbreaks
of cholera among the smog
-The weekend became established in the 1890's
-The theory of evolution had become more widespread and accepted after
Darwin's release of his book 'On the Origin of Species' 26 years before Jekyll
and Hyde was published
-Physiognomy was important, the way someone looked reflected their soul,
criminals didn't look nice
