The persecution of the Jews
-The people who the Nazis hated most and treated most dreadfully was
the Jewish population
-Anti-Semitism means hatred of Jews
-Throughout Europe Jews had been discriminated hundreds of years which
resulted them being treated unjustly in courts or forced living in ghettos
-One reason was religious:
--The Jews were blamed for the death of Jesus
-Another was that they tend to be well educated and therefore had well-
paid jobs or ran successful shops and businesses.
-Hitler hated the Jews insanely he had years of property in Vienna and
became obsessed by the fact that Jews ran the most successful
businesses and stores
-But this also clashed with his idea of Aryans being the perfect master
race
-He also blamed the Jewish businessmen and bankers for their defeat in
World War One
he thought they forced the surrender of the German army.
Early measures against the Jews
-As soon as he was in power in 1933, he began to use the full powers of
the state against the Jews
-They initially banned from civil service and public services such as
broadcasting and teaching
-At the same time the essay and later the SS troopers organised boycotts
of the Jewish shops and businesses which are marked with the Star of
David
-In 1935 the Nuremberg laws to acquire German citizenship from juice and
their forbidden to marry or have sex with pure blooded Germans
-Goebbels propaganda experts bombarded German children and families
with anti-Jewish messages
-In daily life Jesus face discrimination, they might be refused jobs, or a few
serves in schools and in schools’ Jewish children were humiliated and then
segregated

-In 1938 a young Jew killed a German diplomat in Paris which the Nazis
then use this as an excuse to launch revenge
-Plain-clothed SS troopers issued with pick-axes and hammers and the
addresses of Jewish businesses
-They ran riot, smashing up Jewish shops and workplaces:
--91 Jews murdered
--Hundreds of synagogues were burned
--20,000 Jews were taken to concentration camps and thousands more left
the country
-This event became known as Kristallnacht or the night of broken glass
-Many Germans watched the events with alarm and concern
