The Nazis and the churches
-The relationships between the churches the Nazis with complicated
-In the early stage of the Nazi regime there had being some co-operation
Catholic church
--This meant that the Hitler agreed to leave the Catholic Church alone and
they could keep control about schools
---In return the church agreed to stay out of politics
-Hitler tried to get all the Protestant churches to come together in one
official right church just led by the Protestant Bishop Ludwig Miller
--However, many Germans still felt their true loyalties lay with the original
churches and local areas rather than with the state approved church.
-Hitler even encouraged an alternative religion:
--The Pagan German Faith Movement.
-Many churchgoers either supported or did little to oppose the Nazis
-However, there are some very important exceptions:
--The Catholic Bishop Gallen criticised the Nazis throughout the 1930s
---In 1941 he led a protest again against the Nazi policies of killing the
mentally ill and physically disabled
---This forced the Nazis to temporarily stop
----He had such strong support in his followers that the Nazis decided it
was too risky to try to silence him because they don't want any trouble
inside Germany during the war. --Protestant ministers also
resisted the Nazis
---Aston Martin Niemuller was one of the most high-profile critics of the
regime in the 1930s
----Along with Dietrich Bonhoeffer he formed an alternative Protestant
church to the official Reich church
-----These church leaders suffered a similar fate to Hitler’s political
opponents
------Niemuller spent between 1938-1945 in a concentration camp
------Bonhoeffer preached against the Nazis until the Gestapo stopped him
in 1937.
