Why have regional human rights bodies
The reason for this is that it shapes and refines international standards. They create legal
change in their regions to better protect human rights. There is flexibility where
development of normative feedback is allowed, it reflects local cultures/interests.
However, there are cons to regional human right bodies. The first one being it causing
political backlash,
Organisation of American States OAS
In Article 5 of the OAS Charter 1948 it states, ‘Any new political entity that arises from the
union of several Member States and that, as such, ratifies the present Charter, shall become
a Member of the Organization. The entry of the new political entity into the Organization
shall result in the loss of membership of each one of the States which constitute it’.
American Declaration of Human Rights 1948 is the world’s first human rights declaration. It
applies to all OAS States, it is deemed an authoritative interpretation of the charter.

The Organisation of American States was founded on April 30, 1948, in Bogota, Colombia,
with 2 countries signing the original charter.
The purpose of the Organisation of American States is to strengthen peace and security, to
promote representative democracy, ensure the peaceful settlement of disputes among
members, provide for common action in the event of aggression and promote economic,
social and cultural development.
There are 35 independent nations that are member states of the Organisation of American
States (OAS).
