Unit R6165175 - Perform routine electrocardiograph (ECG) procedures

Understand current legislation, national guidelines, policies, protocols and good practice
which impact on own role

1.1 Summarise the current legislation, national guidelines, policies, protocols and good
practice guidelines for performing routine electrocardiograph procedures

According to the National Occupational Standards, we must be able to

 use standard infection prevention and control precautions
 ensure the patient’s safety, security, comfort, privacy and dignity throughout the
procedure
 also our own safety and comfort (who are carrying out the procedure)
 check and confirm the person’s identity and gaining their valid consent
 seek assistance or advice when alternative preparation is required to meet their
specific needs
 to act as their best interest when the patient does not have the capacity
 communicate to them and understand their responses
 confirm the patient is fit to undergo the test
 carry out the procedure, including checking the position of the electrodes, reassure and
instruct the patient, as well as encourage them to relax and not to move during the
procedure
 complete the documentation correctly in line with local policy and protocol
 handle and pass the information accurately

1.2 Explain own responsibilities and accountability in relation to current legislation,
national guidelines, policies, protocols and good practice guidelines

Our role (as nursing assistants) is explaining to our patients what we are going to do and why.
Afterwards, we have to gain their consents before commencing the procedure.

To minimise the infection risk, we have to wash our hands with soap and warm water and dry
with paper towels or use alcohol hand rub, then allow it to dry on the air.
