Oral Disease
Dental Caries- Streptococcus mutans/sanguis (Early stage of infection)
Lactobacilli- Later stage of infection
Stagnation Area- Areas hard to gain access to in mouth
Intrinsic Sugars- Natural sugars in food cell structures
Extrinsic- Added sugars
Sucrose/ Glucose- Most damaging type of sugar, instantly turned to acid that
damages teeth by bacteria
Natural Sugars:
 Harmless
 Fructose
 Milk Extrinsic Sugars
Dried Fruit- Drying process removes all water content and leaves super
concentrated amount of free sugars
Honey- Cariogenic potential (can cause caries/ decay in teeth)
Steria- Non-cariogenic, safe to use
Xylitol- Non- cariogenic
Common Stagnation Areas- MOD (Mesial/Occlusal/Distal areas)
Reversible Pulpitis- Inflammation of the pulp which its symptoms can be
reversed
Irreversible Pulpitis- Tooth necrosis:
1. Increased blood flow
2. No swelling in tooth
3. Pressure cuts off blood supply
4. Death of pulp
5. Death of nerves
6. Pain stops
7. Infection spreads and causes alveolar abscess
