Van’ın küçük bir kasabasında yaşayan Emine Hanım bir dükkân sahibidir. Sabah
erkenden iş yerini açar. Orada çeşitli yiyecekler ve küçük ev eşyaları satar. Daha sonra,
gelen siparişleri raflara yerleştirir. Çok yardımsever bir insandır. Bazen çocuklara
bedava çikolata verir. Müşterilerini her zaman mutluluk ile karşılar. Çalışmayı çok sever
ve evde oturmaktan sıkılır. Mahallede yaşayanlar Emine Hanım’ı çok severler. Dükkânı

Ka returns to Kars and reflects on how much the city has changed.
Otobüs Kars’a üç saat geç girdi. Ka, buraya trenle, yirmi yıl önce bir bahar
günü gelmişti. O zaman istasyonda bir arabaya binmişti. Şoför onu
şehrin her yerinde gezdirdikten sonra, her odasında telefon olan bir otele
götürmüştü. Otobüsten iner inmez hava karlı olduğu için üşüdü. Birden
şehrin çok değişmiş olduğunu düşündü. Daha önce kaldığı otelin yerini
bile hatırlayamadı. Karın altında her şey kaybolmuş gibiydi. Bu sefer
Karpalas Oteli’nde kalacaktı. Gelmeden önce İstanbul’dan telefon edip
odasını ayırtmıştı. Otelin duvarları yüksekti. Ruslar tarafından yapılmış
bir binaydı. Bu otel, arkadaşı İpek’in babasına aitti. Odasına yerleşti. Gece
