To what extent was Betty Friedan the main reason for the growth
of the women’s movement?
Betty Friendnan- the feminine mystique, and then NOW in 1966
which lobbied the government to enforce the prohibition of sex
discrimination in the workplace – successfully lobbied EEOC to
enforce title VII of the civil rights act, also founded the national
woman’s political caucus in 1971
Kate Milllet- 1969 New York red stockings – released their manifesto
which became a core text for defining male supremacy as the ruling
class. They had the abortion right speak out, class consciousness.
Also in 1970 published sexual politics.
Gloria Steinman – established Ms magazine – tackled topics such as
domestic violence, sexual harassment and reproductive rights. Also
founder of the NWPC in 1970 which trains and supports female pro
choice candidates. Also launched women’s action alliance 1970
Richard Nixon won the 1968 election primarily because he
appealed to the ‘silent majority’ of American voters. How far do
