Rugby World Cup

Introduction

The rugby world cup is a men-only union tournament held after every four years by top

international teams. The first tournament was held in 1987, co-hosted by New Zealand and

Australia. Before the Rugby World Cup came to be, there was never a global rugby union

competition, but rather some other types of tournaments such as the six Nation championship

started in 1883. The idea of having a rugby world cup became a topic of discussion in the 1950s

but faced opposition from many unions, then resurfaced in the 1980s, after which the Australian

Rugby Union (ARU) and New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) proposed the development of a

world cup in 1983. The proposal was successful hence the two nations hosted the inaugural

tournament. Currently, the ninth rugby world cup is expected to take place in Japan from

September to November 2019. It is the first time the competition will take place in Asia, so

organizers are taking much consideration of the impact of the rugby world cup on Japan.

There are numerous impacts of the RWC for the Japanese, some of which are negative

while others are positive. A major impact of RWC that this study will embark on is the economic

impact on Japan, which affects the total economic activity and changes in infrastructure. The

essay will also address the noise pollution and traffic congestion which resulting from the masses

flocking the country thus disrupting residents. Another aim of the study is to evaluate how RWC

and other sporting events contribute to injuries and malpractices such as scalping. The essay will

also evaluate how RWC and related sporting events contribute to social consequences such as

criminal activity, violence due to alcohol and substance abuse. The mitigation of the impacts will

involve socio techno strategy which makes use of technology platforms such as pricing bots and

scrum protocol to improve RWC experience.
