Feminism - Is it necessary?
In today's society, when the word “feminism” is brought up a lot of
negative connotations often spring to mind. Unfortunatley, a lot of
people today either don't know enough about it or don't want to know;
these are the people who the pariarchy is often in favour of. People are
unaware of the suffering and oppression that goes on in the world so
are blind to the reasons of why feminism is necessary.
Why is feminism necessary? Feminism, is the advocacy of woman’s
rights to bring about equality among the sexes. It is not anti-men, as
some people seem to think. Feminism is not only about the equality of
women, it is about destroying the patriarchy which forces negative
things onto men also. People seem to get the impression that the
acquisition of women’s rights will be detrimental to men’s rights. The
key word here is equality. Equality. Not fem-superiority or male-
enslavement, or anything like that. Feminism doesn’t want to bring
men down to the level of injustice suffered by women, but rather raise
up the rights of all women, and all non-binary genders, to the rights of
straight, white cis-men - in the process helping the men, for there are
many, who are also at a disadvantage in today’s society. I think that if
feminism was to change it’s name, but still remain the same, many of
the cattle that form the anti-feminist population would be more on
board with it. Many people are scared of calling themselves a feminist
because they are terrified of being associated with females, this shows
that feminism is indeed necessary and that if you are scared of being
associated with females, then you are not a feminist in the first place.
The fact that people think that it is the most undesirable thing in the
world to be female says that there is something very wrong here and
proves that women do not have equal rights, that they are deemed
lesser. I believe that anyone who doesn’t support feminism is either
ignorant to what it is, or are just too narrow-minded. Feminism is
necessary because we are all taught it is unnecessary, that women
should stay unequal, that men need to speak loudly and be dominant
and that women need to sit down and shut up.
There are many negative associations to the word “feminism” and
because of this it is misunderstood by many and also denigrated
regularly. It seems to be a widespread belief that we no longer need
feminism in this day and age and this is incredibly disturbing. In 1963,
John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act declaring it to be the end of
