to mistrust towards Russia
◦ Stalin's government operated in a secretive way, leading many Westerners to
distrust it
◦ 1939: Nazi-Soviet Pact (Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact) - Stalin signed an agreement wit
the Nazis to avoid invasion, proving to the West that he could not be trusted
◦ 1941: Nazis break pact forcing USSR and USA into an unlikely alliance proving the
two could work together
