CHAPTER 1 — INTRODUCTION & HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE
If you have ever opened a past paper and felt like the same questions show up year after year — you are right.
Examiners return to the same concepts because those concepts are at the heart of the Edexcel A-Level Biology
specification. This guide collects the most repeated topics, breaks them down into plain language, and shows you
exactly what a top-mark answer looks like.
Each chapter maps directly to a section of the specification. You will find the question as it typically appears, a clear
model answer, the mark-scheme logic, and an exam tip to stop you losing marks on easy mistakes.
Work through topics you struggle with first. Once you can explain every diagram in your own words without looking at
notes, you are ready.
How marks are awarded
1-mark answers need a single precise fact.
2-mark answers usually need a process — two linked steps.
6-mark answers need a structured explanation — bullet-plan first.
Always read the command word: 'state'=one fact; 'explain'=give the reason; 'evaluate'=weigh evidence.
Command Word Quick-Reference
Command Word What You Must Do Common Mistake
State Give a fact, name, or term — no explanation needed Over-explaining wastes time
Describe Say what happens (not why) Saying 'because' when not asked
Explain Give the reason or mechanism Describing without a cause
Evaluate Discuss evidence for AND against, then judge Only giving one side
Calculate Show working, give units Forgetting units
Compare State both similarities AND differences Only listing one side
