1.1 Define sociology in your own words. (2)
Sociology can be defined as the study of human social behaviour, relationships,
institutions and the way people interact within society. It examines how individuals and
groups influence each other and how social structures affect people's lives (Haralambos
& Holborn, 2018).
1.2 Describe education according to your understanding. (2)
Education refers to a process through which knowledge, values, skills, attitudes and
behaviours are transferred from one generation to another through formal and informal
learning. It aims to develop individuals intellectually, socially and morally so that they
can function effectively within society (Van Staden & Kruger, 2017).
1.3 Explain what is meant by the following terms and give one example of each:
a) Assimilation (2)
Assimilation refers to the process whereby individuals or groups from different cultural
backgrounds gradually adopt the values, language, beliefs and practices of another
dominant culture until they become integrated into that society (Haralambos & Holborn,
2018).
