Tackling the paper:
1. Look carefully at topic at top of paper
2. Read background info carefully
3. Read all sources before attempt questions - about 15 mins
4. Get feel for paper and what over question is (usually q6)

Then start answering!

5. For each question work out answer before start writing-make it focuses of first sentence
6. Look for overall message/view of the source-the big picture
7. Annotate to pick to message
8. Never summarise each source

E.g.
1. What is the source saying?
2. What impression is it giving?
3. What is message of cartoonist?

To think:
For or against?
What is the cartoonist for or against?
How do we know? What details in the carton tell you this?
Why now? Why is the cartoon drawn at this particular time?
Usually cartoons criticise, disapprove, mock

What to write: comment, context, context
1. Opening line w clear answer to question- (comment) the message of this source is…
2. Explain cartoonist point of view
3. Justify point with details from source (content)
4. Put this in wider context to explain why was produced (look at date + use own knowledge)

Don’t need to consider reliability



Purpose
What are the messages trying to achieve-why was it produced?
E.g.
1. Why was this source published in 1936?

To think:
Work out message-annotate source
Look for cartoonist view-is he for or against what he is talking about?
What is the intended impact of the source-what is author trying to achieve?
Use any info given about author to help explain purpose
Look at date- will help work out purpose by using own knowledge
