Unit 8
In this part of the booklet I am going to explain the principal psychological
perspectives and the theorists that took part in the development of these
psychological perspectives. There are six psychological perspectives, which
are behaviourist approach, the social learning approach, psychodynamic
approach, humanistic approach, cognitive approach and biological approach. I
will be also discussing how each theory links to a health and social care
setting. At the end of each psychological perspective I will be explaining the
strengths and weaknesses of each.
P1:
Cognitive approach:
The Cognitive approach is a
‘scientific investigation’ that is all
about our mental abilities, such
as learning, understanding,
thinking and remembering. The
reason why this theory is called
Cognitive theory is because the
word ‘Cognitive’, in Latin
language means ‘To know’
(Scholarpedia, 2011). This
theory focuses on how we
behave and how we think. This
theory says that the activity of our brain is similar to the development of a computer.
Cognitive approach argues that people’s behaviour results from feeling that they feel
from a particular situation. An example of a situation that changes a person’s
behaviour is when someone has made a mistake and feels useless.
The cognitive approach involves a therapy which is called the Cognitive Behavioural
Therapy. The main problems that the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy looks at are:
● Depression
● Eating disorders
● Anger
● Sleep problems
● Habits such as facial tics
● Sexual & relationship problems
