ESC3701

ASSIGNMENT 01

UNIQUE NUMBER: 673821

DUE DATE: 29 APRIL 2026
AFRICAN PHILOSOPHY AND AN AFRICAN PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
African Philosophy challenges the domination of Western and European systems in favour of
African ways and systems.
Question 1:Explain the discourses expressed by African Philosophy. (10)

African philosophy represents a rich and internally diverse tradition of thought concerned with
interpreting reality, knowledge, morality and human existence from within African historical,
cultural and social contexts. Rather than functioning merely as a reaction against Western
philosophy, it asserts African intellectual traditions as philosophically legitimate and worthy of
rigorous engagement. However, it would be simplistic to portray African philosophy only as
oppositional; it is equally engaged in an internal debate about what counts as authentic
philosophical method. Higgs and Letseka (2022:8–10) explain that African philosophy
comprises multiple discourses, each reflecting a distinct attempt to articulate African thought
within local and global contexts. These include ethnophilosophy, sage/wisdom philosophy,
political philosophy and professional philosophy (Higgs & Letseka, 2022:8–10).
