How well do you know you know the boy sitting next to you? Your brother? Your boyfriend? Think of
the men in your life, the handsome ones with good hair who exude charm when they speak. The
smart men, the kind men.
Do you think that they could ever, in a million years be guilty of killing, raping and brutalising countless
women? I’m sure your answer is no - but, then again, that’s the same answer most of the people
around Ted Bundy would have given.
We’ve all heard the name, and recently we’ve seen the memes. But who was Ted Bundy really? And
how did he this typical american boy become one of the most infamous criminals of the last hundred
years.
Nobody can say with exactly when Bundy began his life of crime, and because he was such a clever,
devious criminal we will probably know with certainty the full extent of his heinous acts. On death row,
in the days before he was executed Bundy spoke to Stephen Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth. He
confessed to a number of the murders for which he was a suspect, and he shared some truly gory
details of the crimes which I am not able to repeat.
It is revealed in Netflix documentary series Conversations with a Killer: the Ted Bundy Tapes that all
of Bundy’s victims were women - many of whom resembled his ex-girlfriend Stephanie Brookes. Most
of the time, he approached women in public pretending pretending to need help or acting as a
policeman. He would then overpower them and take them to a second location where he would rape
and kill these defenseless women. On a few occasions, Bundy broke into homes and attacked
sleeping girls. We also know that Bundy was a necrophiliac, and would keep the mutilated bodies of
his victims to perform sex acts on the decomposing corpses.
Ted Bundy was the epitome of an evil genius. He avoided capture for years, and even escaped from
police custody twice. He studied law and was part of the defence team in his court cases. Now,
psychologists say Bundy was the ultimate psychopath - he showed almost no empathy for others,
loved the attention he received from the media and believed that he was superior to most other
people.
But he was so also bright and charming that the judge who sentenced him to death, said that he was
clever and would have had a great career as a lawyer if he had not chosen the path he did. There
were a number of women who fell in love with him, and would write to him in prison praising him. In
fact he married Carole Boone during his trial and somehow she gave birth to his daughter Rosa while
he was on death row.
Over approximately a decade this man committed countless heartless crimes, all of which he denied
until just a fews days before his execution in January 1989. I will close with some of Bundy’s own
words - “I don’t think anybody doubts whether I’ve done some bad things. The question is: what, of
course, and how...and most importantly, why?”. I certainly don’t have the answer for this question, but
i’ll leave you all to think about this.
