NR 360 Week 1 Discussion: What Is Nursing Informatics
Discuss ways that nursing informatics could be applied to all areas of professional nursing
practice, including clinical practice, administration, education, and research. Provide examples of
each. What do you see as the biggest significance of nursing informatics, and why?

, Week 1: What Is Nursing Informatics?

Nursing informatics can be defined as ways to enhance information and communication in
nursing. This helps to improve the quality of care we provide to our patient. It reduces cost and
provides privacy. Nursing informatics can be practiced in all areas of the nursing profession, in
clinical practice, administration, education, and research (McGonigle & Mastria, 2015).
In clinical practice, we use the computer as a tool to get patients information and we use the
information to plan nursing interventions. For example in clinical practice, I have access to
different patient medical records. I explore during clinical setting to use what was thought in
class for real-life cases. I look up my patient chat to know the reason for admission, past medical
history, medications, surgeries, vitals, and allergies. The information I get from the chat shows a
bigger picture of the patient’s health.
Nursing Administration involves healthcare information systems. They are cost analysis and
finding trends for budget purposes, quality assurance and outcomes analysis. In administration,
we have the different administrative department that works to ensure all electronic information is
passed out to the right person or group. In administration, we use email as a means of
communication to the different department in the hospital. Electronic staff scheduling, electronic
billing, health information can be done online, and changes can be done by the management if
needed.
Nursing Education involves Internet resources-CEU’s and formal nursing courses and degree
programs. Nursing education can be distance learning or any form of learning (computerized,
video or software). In nursing, education is a continuous process. We get information and we
give information. Currently, I am learning when I get to the clinical site I am expected to give
back the information I got from my classes. I try to educate my patients about the little I know,
and I also try to learn from my nurse.
Nursing Research uses a computerized literature search such as CINAHL, Medline and Web
sources. In nursing the things, we see or hear has been through various research and test to be
considered safe. As nursing is a continuous learning process it is advised to always lookup
different changes that have been made in nursing practice. They have been so many changes in
nursing practice. After various research changes can be done if any practice is considered unsafe
or harmful. In the hospital, there are different training event to keep staff on track with the right
nursing practices. All this change is a result of different research that has been carried out to help
nurses provide the optimal care to all patient (Katherine, 2013).
What I see as the biggest significance in nursing informatics is modern technology such as the
computer. why because, modern technology made nursing informatics easy to assess. It is time-
saving and it reduces medical errors. Before computer was introduced in healthcare setting
patient chatting was hard written. This means of communication made it hard to read other
people’s writings and it decreases the effect of health care response from patients. I believe
technology in nursing informatics helped improved patient health response faster.

Week 1: What Is Nursing Informatics - Entire Class's Discussion Posts

Week 1: What Is Nursing Informatics?

Discuss ways that nursing informatics could be applied to all areas of professional nursing
practice, including clinical practice, administration, education, and research. Provide
examples of each. What do you see as the biggest significance of nursing informatics, and
why?

Hello Class,

I look forward to this week's discussion focused on what is nursing informatics. Please
be sure to address how nursing informatics could be applied to clinical practice,
administration, education, and research.

As a reminder:

You are required to post a minimum of two substantive posts in each graded discussion.

These two posts must be on 2 separate days.

The first post in each graded discussion must be completed by Wednesday, 11:59 p.m.
Mountain Time (MT).

Week 1-7 discussions must be completed by the end of week, Sunday, 11:59 p.m.
Mountain Time (MT).

For credit, you can start posting on Sunday of each week.

For weekly discussions, please do NOT use quotes. Information should be paraphrased
with an in-text citation. Quotes should be used in rare situations.

Hope everyone has a great week!

○ Professor and class,
Nursing informatics is used to communicate information, data and
knowledge in the nursing practice. Nursing informatics is composed of
nursing science, computer science and information science (HIMMS,
2019). To be a successful nurse, effective communication is key.
Nursing informatics could be applied to all areas of professional
nursing practice such as clinical practice, administration, education and
research.
A registered nurse working in a clinical setting uses informatics
daily. For example, the use of electronic health records (EHR), and
electronic medical records (EMR) is a form of information technology
that nurses use to document patient information. They also use
Telehealth and EHR’s to communicate with other health care team
members (ATI Community Health Nursing, 2016).
A nurse who works in an administrative setting will use databases,
billing systems, spreadsheets, and software applications (ATI
Community Health Nursing, 2016). They use technology to generate
reports such as history of falls or hospital acquired infections within a
unit. They can also use informatics to keep track of nurse-to-patient
ratios, staff-schedule, and upcoming events such as meetings etc.
A nurse educator uses technology when conducting an online
course, and can communicate with students via E-mail. Nurse
educators who work in a hospital setting can hold meetings
electronically, use chat-rooms, and conduct orientations/training with
the use of technology (ATI Community Health Nursing, 2016). At
Chamberlain College of Nursing, professors utilize the simulation lab
and use technology to aid the students perform real life scenarios.
Nurse researchers use informatics to obtain and collect data for
research purposes. They use computers and smartphones to access
the internet (ATI Community Health Nursing, 2016). In addition, they
might look at electronic health records and/or charting to gather data.
