Ethical Frameworks in the Paris Agreement
The Paris Agreement is a global initiative addressing climate change, and its creation
reflects a blend of ethical frameworks that guided its development and influenced the nations that
signed it. The ethical frameworks of Western, Eastern, and Indigenous Tribal ideologies are
evident in the agreement's principles, emphasizing justice, collaboration, and sustainability. The
agreement's principles reflect the justice, the collaboration, and sustainability emphasized by
Western, Eastern, and Indigenous Tribal ethics. The Paris Agreement embodies one main ethical
framework - Western ethics. The concepts of justice and fairness underpin the Agreement
though. This is evident in the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities and
respective capabilities" (UNFCCC, 2015).
Typically, Western ethics prioritize fairness, and they achieve this by acknowledging the
historical contributions of affluent nations to climate disruption. Fairness also requires that
attention is given to the varied capabilities of nations to remedy the climate problem. When these
ethical considerations are considered, we see that Western nations are obliged to provide
meaningful and sufficient support to developing nations, not only through financing but also
through the transfer of crucial technologies.
Eastern ethical frameworks also play a role, particularly in their emphasis on balance,
harmony, and collective action. For example, Eastern belief systems, which are shaped by
Confucian and Buddhist, place a strong emphasis on interconnectedness and the value of
collective effort in reaching common objectives. This viewpoint is in line with the kind of global
teamwork that the Paris Agreement fosters, where countries join to establish not only common
but also binding targets for limiting the warming of our world. In the East, people place a very
