Anatomy of the Urinary System

1. The urinary system has __two__ kidneys, __two___ ureters, and __one___

bladder.

The urinary system has two kidneys, two ureters, and one bladder (and one

urethra)

2. Describe the shape, weight and location of the adult kidney.

The adult kidney is bean-shaped, weighing approximately 5 ounces, and is

located between the T-12 and L-3 vertebrae, mostly protected by the rib cage. The right

kidney lies slightly lower than the left because the liver is positioned above it.

An adult kidney is bean-shaped, about the size of a can of soup and weighs

about 5 ounces. The right kidney lies slightly lower than the left because of the

liver's location just above it. Both kidneys are mostly protected by the rib cage

because of their location between the T-12 and L-3 vertebra.

3. The ____glands are located on top of each kidney.

Adrenal glands

4. Describe the three layers of protective tissue that surround the kidney.

The kidney’s surface is protected by three layers of tissue

Innermost to outermost: renal capsule, adipose capsule, and renal fascia.

The tough, fibrous skin of the renal capsule specializes in protection from injury or

infection. Then, the adipose capsule, a layer of cushion, protects the kidney from

trauma. The outer renal fascia is a dense fibrous connective tissue that holds the

kidney in place within the abdominal cavity.

The kidney surface is protected by three layers of specialized tissue. The

renal capsule is a tough fibrous outer skin of the kidney which protects it from

injury and infection. Outside of the renal capsule is a fatty layer that protects the

kidney from trauma called the adipose capsule. The outer renal fascia is dense

fibrous connective tissue which keeps the kidney in place inside the abdominal

cavity.

5. A vertical cross section shows what three regions inside the kidney?

Layers of the kidney, outermost to innermost: Renal cortex, renal medulla, and

renal pelvis.

6. The _____ is a continuous outer region with several cortical columns.

Renal cortex

7. The renal medulla is divided into sections called _____.

Pyramids

8. Describe the renal pelvis.

The renal pelvis is the centermost section of the kidney, near the renal hilus. It

creates a funnel-shaped tube that connects to the ureter as it leaves the hilus. Several

extensions of the pelvis, called calyces, collect the urine, which drains into the renal

pelvis and then into the ureter. The ureter transports the urine to the bladder for storage.

The renal pelvis constitutes a funnel-shaped tube that connects to the

ureter as it leaves the hilus.

9. Label blood supply to and within the kidney. Make any notes/comments here.

WILL REVIEW figures in module (7.4, 7.5)

10. Trace the flow of blood through the vessels of the kidney from renal artery

into the glomerulus and back to the renal vein.

The renal artery branches into the segmental artery, which further divides into

the lobar artery, further into the interlobar artery, then divides into the arcuate artery,

then into the interlobular artery, which feeds into the afferent arterioles of the

glomerulus. After filtration, the blood moves to the efferent arteriole, then to either

peritubular or Vasa recta capillaries, and drains into interlobular veins, which

converge in the arcuate vein, then to the interlobar vein, then the renal vein, which

exits the kidney.

Arcuate artery, (6) Interlobular artery, (7) Afferent arteriole, (8) Glomerular
