Assignment 57: Report

Title:
Intrinsic and extrinsic factors that contribute to sport performance in the sport mixed martial arts on
one male athlete.

Abstract:
In this proposal we will be determining which intrinsic and extrinsic factors contribute to sport
performance in the sport mixed martial arts on one male athlete. These factors will be determined
by using qualitative interviews. By using qualitative interviews, the researcher will get the personal
experience of the athlete. By determining the intrinsic and extrinsic factors the athlete and coach
can regulate which aspects should be developed to improve sport performance. The intrinsic and
extrinsic factors will be individually determined for each individual athlete. In this case the
population sample is one 32-year-old male athlete that has participated and competed in the sport
mixed martial arts for three years. The findings will be unique and tailored for the specific athlete.
This will guarantee improvement.

1.1 Theoretical contributions
Intrinsic factors can be described as factors that are within the body according to Srikannathas
(2020). There are many intrinsic factors that play a role in the performance of sport. Some factors
are universal while others are related to a specific sport (College, 2007).

Personality
Personality can be defined as temperament, intellect, character, and physique. These things
define an individual’s behaviour and his/ her actions in any situation. Every individual has core
aspects which stays the same and stable, but one must consider what will happen when the
situation changes. This “New View” focus on the interaction between core traits and peripheral
aspects (McAdams, 2020). According to Kulp (2020) there are many different personality
characteristics that make a good athlete. These characteristics are: self-confidence, self-discipline,
optimism, sense of belonging, natural leader, willingness to learn and take criticism, humility,
ability to handle stress, low anxiety, trust in the process, humility, resilience from setbacks,
perfectionism, vulnerability, killer instinct, willingness to fight and appreciation.

Motivation
Motivation is defined as the process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented behaviours
(Cherry, 2020). Motivation comprises the biological, emotional, social, and cognitive forces that
initiate behaviour. Psychologists have many theories on what motivates people. Some of these
theories includes Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, drive theory, instinct theory, and different theories
on motivation. According to Cherry (2020) there are many factors that influences motivation and
these factors can be intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation can be to succeed in your goal and
having the gratification of doing so, extrinsic motivation can be the rewards, trophies, or fame you
will have after succeeding in your goal (Cherry, 2020). Cherry (2020) also states that there are
three different components of motivation; firstly the activation which is when you make the
decision to reach your goal, secondly is persistence this is where you make a continuous effort to
reach your goal, and thirdly is the intensity and concentration you put in to reaching your goal.

Psychology for the win and a little PGCE on the side.

I\'m currently busy with my BA HONS in Counseling. Last year I finished my PGCE. Various assignments for different modules are available with old exam papers and study notes. I\'m hoping I can help make your University life a little easier and stress free. I\'m making mistakes so you don\'t have to. New uploads contain feedback from the University on how to improve.
