1 Translate the following passage into English.

Alexander flees the advance of Darius’ much larger army. Later, while bathing in a river, he is
seized with cramp. A doctor prescribes a cure, but Alexander has received a letter warning him
against this man.


regi nuntiatum est Darium cum multis milibus peditum equitumque appropinquare. itaque valles
fugiens suas copias trans montes ducere constituit. cum Tarsum advenisset, captus pulchritudine
fluminis per mediam urbem fluentis, depositis armis, statim plenus pulveris ac sudoris in frigidam
aquam se proiecit. tum subito tantus rigor totum corpus
eius occupavit ut membra movere non posset ac vox includeretur. non modo nulla spes 5
remedii, sed ne mora quidem mortis inveniebatur.


forte erat unus ex medicis, nomine Philippus, qui solus remedium offerebat; sed rex hunc
suspicabatur. amicus enim fidelis, ignorans infirmitatem Alexandri, epistulam priori die miserat,
in qua monuerat ut illum hominem caveret, quod a Dario multa pecunia
