Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs
Headi Jaf

P1: Explain the Importance of promoting equality and diversity for individuals
with different needs.

The definition of equality is "the state of being equal." It's one of the ideals a
democratic society, and so the fight to attain different kinds of equality, like racial
equality, gender equality, or equality of opportunity between rich and poor, is often
associated with progress toward that ideal of everyone being truly equal.

The definition of diversity means understanding that each individual is unique and
recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race,
ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities,
religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies

The definition of Discrimination means treating a person unfairly because of who
they are or because they possess certain characteristics. If you have been treated
differently from other people only because of who you are or because you possess
certain characteristics, you may have been discriminated against.

Discrimination is “the practice of unfairly treating an individual or group of individuals
differently from other people or group of people” (Cheema, 2018). This is when you
treat an individual unfairly to other individuals. Discrimination basically means
treating an individual unfairly because of who they are or because they have got
certain characteristics that people dislike. These characteristics are highlighted
within the Equality Act 2010. Some of these “protected characteristics are age,
gender, race, disability, religion, pregnancy and maternity, sexual orientation, gender
reassignment and marriage and civil partnership”

Application to Patrick
In regard to Patrick Green, the importance of promoting equality and diversity is vital
because of his sexuality. He should feel respected at all time and he needs to have
to have the right to be comfortable about his sexuality. Just because he is gay, does
not mean he should receive a different type of care compared to anyone else with
the same needs as him.

Types of Discrimination
There are four types of discrimination which are unfair discrimination, direct
discrimination, indirect discrimination and positive discrimination.
Unfair discrimination is when an individual is treated unfairly compared with another
individuals. An example, for how unfair discrimination is presented is when an
individual is not considered for a job because they are older than the other candidate
that has applied for the job. Even though, they have the same qualifications and
experiences as the other individual.
Direct discrimination is when an individual is rude, aggressive or violent to another
individual because they see them as being different. Direct discrimination is also
“when an individual with a protected characteristic is treated less favorably” than
other individuals around them”. An example, for how direct discrimination is
presented is when and individual that is overweight is called by names from other
individuals they are surrounded by. Another example, for how direct discrimination
can be presented within a setting is that if two individuals with the same qualification
and experience go to apply for a job and one of their applications are ignored

because they are policy in place. Is that, an “organization might include a clause
that forces all employees to work on Sunday”. This would put all Christians at a
particular disadvantage because every Sunday is a day of worship for Christians. An
example, for how indirect discrimination is presented is when a manger appears to
be supportive and friendly towards a member of staff. However, they may show
disrespect for that individual’s ideas or suggestions by dismissing them in a jokey
way.

Positive discrimination is when a decision is made in an individual’s favor because
there is something that different about that individual. An example, for how positive
discrimination is presented is when a service has few service users from an ethnic
minority at a certain level, so the service provider would appoint an individual from
that ethnic minority.

The anti-discriminatory practice is a way of working that promotes equality, inclusion
and prevents and deals with discrimination. It evolved empowering individuals and
ensuring they have individual rights in accordance to the law.

The 4 initiatives are Access, Support, Diet, The use of advocacy services.
For Access, the environment can be adapted, for example, by having wide corridors,
ramps, disabled toilets, lifts, counters and hearing hoops.
For Support, appropriate resources and information are provided in a wide range of
formats and languages to reflect local cultures with advocates, translators,
interpreters and careers available to help.
For diet, there is no choice for those with medical conditions, religious, requirement,
cultural preferences.

Application to Nusrat
Nusrat Patel was given an advocate to help with expressing her needs and wishes.
The use of advocacy services is vital to help those with special needs, such as
Nusrat because it is that extra bit of help, she needs to be treated as well and made
as happy and she can be. This not only might improve her difficulty with expressing
her needs in the long run, but it can also make her more comfortable to being herself
around her service providers

M1: Analyse the impact of preventing discrimination for individuals with
different needs.
The impact of discrimination on patients is that they would feel more stressed. As
well as this, they would have a low self-esteem which would then cause the service
user to have less confidence. Due to this, the individual would lose a sense of who
they are, they would also feel unable to work, they would live in fear of others, and
they would develop mental illnesses due to the amount of stress they are
experiencing. This would eventually leave the individual to be hesitant to seek
support. Which therefore means the individual would not seek help from others and
they would slowly withdraw themselves away from everyone. An individual would do
this by not taking part in social activities.

The impact of discrimination on the patients that experience discrimination would be
that they would be affected physically and emotionally. This is because if an
individual has been discriminated by a healthcare professional within a healthcare
