Students will be able to apply grade-level phonics skills in decoding and encoding words.



This instructional goal will support student learning by increasing their reading and

language skills. In order to learn how to decode and encode fluently, students must be able to

identify graphemes or spelling patterns and the phonemes or sounds they represent, and vice

versa. The instructional goal will also support student thinking because they will be able to learn

and apply phonemic strategies that they can use when they are struggles with decoding and

encoding words. The instructional goal will also support student engagement because students

will be more engaged in the lesson when they are able to read lesson and writing prompts on

their own and respond in their own without struggling asking for assistance on how to spell

unknown words.

Part A1: Instructional Strategies

One instructional strategy that I would use to help my students be successful in this

instructional goal is by using the Kagen structure “Mix-Pair-Share” while decoding grade-level

words. Mix-Pair-Share is a learning activity that increases student engagement and helps retain

the information that they are learning and practicing. During this activity, each student will have

a decodable passage and work with multiple partners identifying and decoding words in the

passage with the phonemes that they have learned so far throughout the year. I will circulate
