Memory - Part One -

Three Processes in Memory -
Encoding - selective attention and transform information to be stored in memory.
Storage - keeping or maintaining information in memory.
Retrieval - stored information is brought to mind.

Sensory -
Holds information coming through senses for fraction of second to several seconds.
Each piece of information stored for briefest period of time.
Sensory memory can hold vast amounts of information briefly.
Holds visual images for a fraction of a second.
Holds sounds for two seconds.

Short -Term Memory (STM) -
Limited capacity - 5 to 9 bits of information.
STM works less than 30 seconds.
When STM is full displacement occurs.
Bits of information made larger by chunking.
Information kept in short-term memory by rehearsal.
Codes information in acoustic form.
Can hold visual images.
Can store information in semantic form (meaning).
