 QUESTION 1

1.1. Briefly explain two benefits of exposing young learners to appropriate pieces of literature.

 Literature aids in language development, enriching a child's vocabulary and comprehension
skills, which are fundamental for effective communication (Evans et al. 2017: 29).

 It helps children understand and process emotions, providing a safe space to explore feelings
and develop empathy by seeing situations from various perspectives (Evans et al. 2017: 31).

1.2. Provide four reasons why it is beneficial to make use of graphic novels and/or comics in the
Foundation Phase classroom.

 Visual literacy is developed, as learners engage with both text and images, enhancing their
ability to interpret visual messages (Rudd 2010: 100).

 These texts simplify language comprehension, making reading more accessible, especially for
early or second-language learners (Evans et al. 2017: 126).

 Graphic novels and comics are highly engaging, capturing the attention of children through a
combination of images and text, which increases their interest in reading (Evans et al. 2017:
126).

 Creativity is fostered, as learners are exposed to imaginative storylines and visual styles that
encourage creative thinking and expression (Evans et al. 2017: 126).
