Due Date: March 13 (Wednesday), 2024 at 11:59 PM on UM Learn.
Total Marks: 61

Purpose: In this assignment, you will practice conducting different types of t-test using JASP and computing
relevant statistics.

*********************INSTRUCTIONS (Read Carefully)*************************************
1. SAVE your assignment as a PDF file before submission. To do so, Click File, Save As, and choose the
location, then click the drop down menu beside “Save as type” and select PDF.
2. Submit your PDF format assignment via UM Learn assignment submission folder. Make sure to save

3. You can keep the question wordings in this document and type your response in blue color
underneath each question or into the table for filling out the cells.
4. For questions that specify to “show calculation”, show one step of calculation by plugging in or
writing out the scores according to the appropriate formula, in addition to providing the result (round
to two decimal places) if there is infinite decimal places. Report the p-value in three decimal places.

Q1. JASP and One-Sample t Test. Imagine that you are interested in testing how many hours of sleep U of
M students typically get. The general belief is that the population of university students report getting an
average of 7 hours of sleep per night (i.e., µ = 7). You randomly recruited a sample of U of M students and
asked them to report their hours of sleep. Use Assignment 4 Data.sav and follow instructions in the Lab 4
Tutorial to complete the following questions.

A. Using a two-tailed test, state the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis. [2 marks]

Null hypothesis using symbol:
Alternative hypothesis using symbol:

Null hypothesis in words:
Alternative hypothesis in words:

B. What was the mean number of hours of sleep in this sample? Two-decimals. [1 mark]

C. What was the value of the obtained t statistic? Report using the correct format t(df) = … with two
decimals. [1 mark]

D. What was the p-value in the JASP output? [1 mark]

E. Under α = .05, would you reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis? [1 mark]

F. Calculate the 95% confidence interval for the mean.
a. What are the critical values of t (Find the value using Appendix B Table B.2 – The t Distribution in your
textbook)? [1 mark]

b. What is the estimated standard error of the mean from the JASP output? (Report the exact value) [1 mark]
