Hot Rolled Cold Rolled
Most large or complex shapes are hot Cold formed shapes are
rolled. manufactured from plate
Shapes are created by rolling red hot Plate is cut then bent into
billets of steel in specially formed rollers shapes and welding if required
until the required shape is drawn out.
Cold formed steel is bright silver
Shapes are characterized by tight exterior in finish
corners with fillets at interior corners.
Hot rolling results in a black surface with
areas of mill slag and is generally not
suitable for exposed applications without
some treatment.
Lecture 7 - Steel - Construction 1
, Steel Sections
W Sections
Wide Flange Sections, or I-Beams
Naming Convention
W150x30
Around 150mm deep
Weights 30kg/m
Tells us approx. depth and
weight (which can compare
cost) but no real dimensions
C Sections
Channels
Lecture 7 - Steel - Construction 2
, Naming Convention
C200x21
Around 200mm deep
Weights 21kg/m
Tells us approx. depth and weight
(which can compare cost) but no real
dimensions
C, MC
L Sections
Angles
Naming Convention
L102x76x9.5
Depth d = 102
Width b = 76
Wall thickness t = 9.5
Tells real dimensions but not weight
