Industrial chemistry
Functions of industrial chemistry:
- The isolation of naturally occurring substances for use as raw materials.
- Processing of raw materials by chemical reaction to manufacture
commercial products
- The use of chemicals to provide services.
Development of an industrial chemical process:
1. A need for particular product is identified
2. Various ways of producing the chemical are studied in terms of hazard
and economic costs; inside a laboratory.
3. Data is evaluated by chemists, chemical engineers, businessmen, and
safety engineers.
4. Pilot-plant test is carried out in order to ensure the reaction is viable at
large scale, to test reactor design, determine cost of process, evaluate
hazard and gather environmental impact information.
