The Reggio Emilia approach to early learning has gathered large amounts of interest from vast

amounts of childcare centres and private schools alike. The approach was created shortly after

the second world war by Italian psychologist Loris Malaguzzi alongside other parents in the area

of Reggio Emilia (The Compass School, 2019). The approach was created based upon the belief

that children needed a way of learning that encouraged them to express themselves and form

their individual personalities (The Compass School, 2019). The approach saw young children as

little people who needed assistance in forming their unique personalities (The Compass School,

2019). The approach began to expand in the area and was later integrated into the foundation of

the local government before getting realized by North America (The Compass School, 2019).

Although Canada and the United States tried to incorporate the Reggio approach into their

childcare, it could not be duplicated the exact way so centres began adopting the Reggio

approach instead. The Reggio Emilia curriculum makes the child the main decision-maker in

their development through the idea of one hundred languages and other foundations in daily

routines, environmental planning and encouraging the educator to be both an observer and a

learner with the students in the classroom.

The Reggio Emilia approach builds upon the belief that children express themselves in

one hundred languages through painting, drawing, music, dance and an abundance of other ways

(The 100 Languages). Creating environments that encourage children to use these languages

creates opportunities for the children to build the foundation of expressing themselves as well as

their wants and needs through different artistic outlets. The most important basis of the Reggio

Emilia approach to early learning is the belief that each child is the main decision-maker in their

learning experience and are fully capable individuals who use their interests, abilities and

creativity to learn (The Compass School, 2019). This approach supports the developmental needs
