Introduction
Welcome to SickKids. Our hospital is one of the largest paediatric academic
health science centres in the world. Each year we have approximately
240,000 ambulatory visits, 77,000 emergency department visits and 16,000
admissions. As a result, we are able to offer you a variety of rich clinical
experiences in multiple inpatient and ambulatory care settings.
To prepare you for a successful clinical placement and to maximize your
learning experience we have developed this information package. It will
introduce you to important principles of paediatric clinical care and to specific
policies and procedures followed in our institution. You are required to review
the information prior to the start of your clinical placement. You may need to
set aside several hours to thoroughly review the content and we suggest that
you do the review over the course of several days. Note that during your
orientation day you might be asked to complete a test with questions from
various sections of this information package.

Roles and Responsibilities
Undergraduate Nursing Students
The following behaviours are expected of nursing students:
Respects the safety and well-being of patients
Recognizes own limits of knowledge, skills, and judgement
Understands and clarifies own role in the provision of care
Uses clear, accurate and effective communication
Identifies need for and obtains appropriate supervision
Notifies educator if not achieving objectives
Demonstrates accountability for the quality of care provided within the
established objectives
Follows SickKids policies, procedures and principles
Students are permitted to:
Perform controlled acts authorized to nursing if they meet all three criteria:
Have been taught by their faculty, preceptor or educator
Have the knowledge, skill and judgment to perform them as
determined by their preceptor or faculty member
Are supervised by a member of the nursing staff at SickKids or their clinical instructor
Students are not permitted to:
Perform delegated medical acts
Act as a witness under any circumstances and for any purpose
Provide second check for controlled drugs, blood products, breast milk, and
medications listed as requiring independent double checking, double signing
and documentation
Provide telephone advice for discharged families
Take verbal or telephone orders
Be left in sole charge of any patient
Transport patients alone when the presence of an RN is required
Perform controlled acts without supervision by an RN
