Assignment Introduction.
In this assignment, I will conduct a report of which I have already had research on. My report
will examine the strategic and operational approaches to developing international trade. For
my report, my selected business will be McDonalds.

McDonalds is a fast foods franchise that operates within retail chains internationally that
trades Beverages, Breakfasts, Meals/Lunch, Hot Drinks, Ice Cream and Shakes.. The first
McDonald's restaurant was located at San Bernardino on Friday, 15th of April, 1995.
McDonalds was founded by Dick and Mac McDonald. McDonalds now owns over
40,000 restaurants globally and has a slogan of “I’m Lovin’ It”.

5/E.P8 - Explain how products and processes have to be adapted for international
markets by a selected business.
For the P8 criteria of my assignment, I will be discussing the process of McDonalds adapting
(or re-engineering) products (and/or services) to meet the preferences of international
markets. McDonalds adapts (or re-engineers) their products (and/or services) so that they
can meet their target market’s preferences and tastes as well as reducing costs to still
provide their quality foods. If McDonalds does not meet the preferences of their target
market in their new country, this will cause McDonald’s productions to come to a halt or fail in
the foreign market because of any cash flow problems.

When a business re-engineers, this would be when the business would meet their target
market’s preferences by changing features of a product and/or service and even the way the
product is marketed. An example of a business re-engineering their advertisements would
be Pepsi’s “Live for now”. Pepsi’s Live for now advertisement had received
reports/complaints within 24 hours of the advertisements during the peak stages of the Black
Lives Matter movement in America. There was a comparison made by viewers between
Iesha Evans and Kendall Jenner. It seemed that Kendall Jenner had protested whereas

Iesha was arrested for her protest. The reason behind the advertisement being taken down
would be that such an advertisement could tarnish Pepsi’s reputation. An effect of the
advertisement on Pepsi would be that there was a drop of sales for a short period of time. It
is unclear whether this had a positive or negative impact on Pepsi's revenue. As Pepsi did
not conduct their research effectively, this had all sorts of negative impacts; however, this
was beneficial in the slightest manner as Pepsi will now consider current factors when it
comes to advertisement.
A re-engineered or adaption that McDonalds has made for their Muslim Market in Islamic
countries such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan would be that all the foods that are being
produced are halal. There are unique products that aren’t available in other countries such
as the Chicken McArabia and the McRoyale within Saudi Arabia. For McDonalds to cater a
wide range of foods, this will attract those who are health conscious as McDonalds is known
to be a healthier alternative compared to the other fast food restaurants/takeaways through
the use of less oils and fatty ingredients.

Nasi Lemak is a rice dish infused with coconut milk and pandan leaf. This is a dish which
originates from Malaysia but is very popular in Singapore. Nasi Lemak can be eaten as
breakfast, lunch or dinner! Therefore, the McDonald's franchise in Singapore had diversified
their menu and had introduced the Nasi Lemak Burger which consists of a coconut flavoured
patty, Fried egg, Cucumber, Caramelised onions and served in Semolina Buns!

My final example of how McDonalds have re-engineered or adapted their foods would be
that in Canada, McDonald’s Franchises have introduced and sell the Breakfast Burrito/Wrap.
However, due to unfortunate circumstances such as the lockdown, this had an impact on the
wants and needs of their breakfast.

I would put a paragraph in about them failing (relatively) in China
A reason why McDonalds has failed in China is because they had half of the restaurants that
KFC had. This means that KFC was ‘too’ established for McDonalds. In other words, KFC
had more of a presence than McDonalds in China and the market share of KFC was higher.
KFC is popular in China due to meeting local preferences and another factor to why
McDonalds isn’t popular is because in 2014, McDonalds have re-labeled expired beef for
patties.

5/E.M5 - Analyse the effectiveness of the strategies and resources used by a selected
business.
For the M5 criteria of my assignment, I will be discussing the 8 different types of strategies
and 5 different types of resources for international business and then I will be writing about
the effectiveness of the strategies (by mentioning an advantage and disadvantage) and
resources used by my selected business.

Strategies.

Subsidiary Business.
A Subsidiary Business is where a parent company holds 50% or more of shares within the
business. An example of this would be BMW being the parent company of BMW, Mini and
