Chemistry unit 5 notes
9.1 oxidation and reduction
Oxidation -> loss of electrons
Reduction → gain of electrons
Oxidation - reduction reaction (redox) → electrons transferred between entities
Oxidizing agent: reactant accepts electrons and oxidizes another reactant
◦Undergoes reduction
Reducing agent: reactant donates electrons and reduces another reactant
◦Undergoes oxidization
Half-reaction equation: part of redox equation representing either oxidation reaction or reduction reaction
Oxidation numbers/state: number used to track # of electrons in redox reaction
◦Shared electrons go to most electronegative
9.2 balancing redox reactions
Half reaction method
1. Separate into 2 half reactions
2. Balance everything but H and O
3. Add water to account for unbalanced O
4. Add H ions to balance HzO
5. Add electrons
6. Match equations so same amount of é
7. Add 2 half reactions together
8. Cancel out like terms
If basic
1. Add OH to both sides
2. Combine H and OH
3. Cancel out waters
