SS10 Notes - Unit 1 - Settlement
Indigenous Peoples have inhabited Eastern Canada for over 10,000 years. It is believed they
arrived from Asia across the Bering Strait.
They have 12 main linguistic groups in Canada:
- The Inuit - Arctic
- Beothuks - Newfoundland
- Algonquin - Central
- Iroquois - St Lawrence Lowlands
- Huron and Sioux - Manitoba
- Pacific Coastal Groups
Etc.
There are 3 groups: Métis, First Nations and Inuit
Exploration -> Colonisation -> Genocide
European arrival fundamentally changed indigenous life. The French settled St Lawrence and the
English on the East Coast. Indigenous groups got involved in a lot of conflicts over fur trade
arguments.
The Indigenous had new diseases introduced to them, such as TB and Syphilis. Over half of the
residents of many communities passed from epidemics e.g. Huronia in 1629. This was both
accidental and on purpose, a tactic used and documented by the colonists.
France first founded Quebec in 1608, and lost its land to GB in 1763, during which France
owned ¾ of North America.
The first inhabitants of ‘Nouvelle France’ were mostly single men, who were indentured
servants. Since they did not have to pay the fee for the boat, they had to work off the debt for 6
months, after which they could leave.
In the early 1660s almost half of the people in New France were recent immigrants.
When the British took New France, there were over 70,000 inhabitants. The number of
Anglophones was increasing very quickly after the American revolution, as well as European
immigrants, especially from GB.
