Instructor: Dr. Deping Ye; Email: ; Office: HH 3010, (709)864-8793.
Homepage: http://www.math.mun.ca/˜depingy/
Lecture Time & Room: Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 11:00-11:50 (Slot 4); ED 3034A.
Lab Time & Room: Tuesday: 9:00-10:20; HH 3017.
Textbook: Real Analysis Course Notes by Bruce Watson, 2011; C29-079-12-10-30. This course covers
Chapters 8, 9, 10 and 7.
Reference: If you need some references for analysis course or more problems to practice, you can go to
library and search for “Mathematical Analysis” or “Real Analysis” (please make sure the table of contents
is compatible with our textbook). Here I list a reference for your convenience: Understanding Analysis (by
Stephen Abbott, which can be freely downloaded through the library).
Prerequisite: Math 3000 (48491).
Office Hours: Thursday: 9:30-12:00; Monday and Friday: 13:00-14:00.
You can also make appointment by email (emails later than 22:00 may not be replied in time).
Classroom Policy: You should keep your cell phone mute during our class time. Please raise your hand
for questions.
Homework: “Practice makes perfect”. If possible, please do as many problems as you can. At least you
should do the assigned homework (the most important part of the course). Homework assignments will be
announced in class or by D2L usually one week in advance.
Assignments should be placed in Assignment Box #40 no later than 4:00pm on the due date, or
submitted at the beginning of class on the due date. Late assignments will not be accepted. If you miss a
homework assignment and provide an acceptable reason, your total homework mark will be based just on
those assignments marked. At most two homework assignments may be forgiven in this manner. Do
not email assignment solutions to me.
Midterm Exams: One midterm exam is scheduled during our lab time on Feb 12. (Precise) material
covered in the midterm exams will be announced in advance. No make-up midterm exams. If you
miss a midterm exam and provide an acceptable reason, your missed midterm marks will be prorated to
the final exam.
Quizzes: Weekly quiz will be given during the Lab time. Please make sure that you do not miss any
quizzes, as there are no make-up quizzes. If you miss a quiz and provide an acceptable reason, your
total quiz marks will be based just on those quizzes marked. At most two quizzes may be forgiven in
this manner.
Final Exam & Room: TBA
Grading: Homework 15% in total; Quizzes 15% in total, Midterm exam 25%; and Final exam 45%.
General Exam Information: The point of a quiz or an exam is to prove the grader that you know how
to solve the problems asked. Thus the final answer is not the most important part of the exams; rather
it is the work or reasoning behind the answer. In order to get higher or full credit, you should show your
work or explain your thinking.
Important Dates: Jan. 3, Lectures begin; Jan. 17, Last day to add courses; Feb. 18-22, Winter
semester break; Feb. 28, Last day to drop courses without academic prejudice; April. 5, Last day of
lectures; April. 10-20, Final exam period.
