What Is Conflict?
The definition of conflict in my own words is the disagreement between two individuals
most likely following a negative interaction. Problems or differences are often seen as a catalyst
for conflict or surrounding the occurrence. I also believe that conflict is natural and a part of life
because there will always be problems, differences, and disagreements. I do not think conflict is
either good or bad but showcases the differences each person holds. For example, we all have
our own opinions and beliefs that help us learn and grow from one another.
Why Does Conflict Occur?
, Conflict may occur for many different reasons depending on the situation and a persons’
personality, feelings, and/ or emotions. I will use a personal example of family relationship
conflict that may be relatable to many others. Difference in beliefs, especially in regard to life
issues and choices, has personally created tension between my parents and me as a child.
Miscommunication and lack of effort to try to understand me as their child also did lead to
tension and resentment within the conflict relationships as well.
Preventing Conflict
Prevention and recognizing the signs of pending conflict will enable the significance of
effective communication and developing a level of understanding of that person and their
viewpoint. According to Coleman et al., prevention is inevitable because a system or relationship
that warrants change needs conflict and constructive resolution (2000). It was also said that
associating triggers and expecting conflict will be essential in developing techniques to better
manage it constructively.
