PICO(T) Structure and Evidence
There are many methods that are promoted with evidence that are beneficial for
addressing many medical care related topics. The objective of evidence-based practices is to
enhance the patients health outcomes and improve patient safety. A PICO(T) formed question
is a method used when research is being conducted. The PICO(T) system is utilized in order
to determine interventions, population, outcomes, comparisons, and time. The PICO(T)
question we will investigate in this paper is. “Does hand sanitizing effect reduce hospital-
acquired pneumonia just as well as hand washing correctly with soap?
Utilizing the PICO(T) Approach
Hospital acquired pneumonia (HAP) is a respiratory illness that occurs during a
patient's hospital stay. HAP accounts for approximately 15-20% of all hospital infections
acquired. The number of hospital acquired pneumonia infections corresponds to the quality of
nursing care that is given. The PICO(T) approach will be used in this study to determine how
hand washing vs hand sanitizing affects HAP rates. A practice known as “hand hygiene” is
utilized in order to assess a patient’s outcome. Further infection can delay the healing process
for hospitalized patients. Hand washing will be the intervention to improve patient health
outcomes. There is no hand washing vs hand sanitizing data in comparison. The outcome
expected heavily relies on whether effective hand washing decreased the HAP rates.
