•the psychosocial crisis in middle adulthood is generativity vs.
stagnation
•generativity means contributing to the next generation in some
way. it is important for people in middle adulthood to give
back to the next generation so that they don't feel stagnant
- commitment to continuation and improvement of society as
a whole
- biological generativity - bearing offspring
- parental generativity - nurturing children
- work generativity - skills to pass on
- cultural generativity - creating renovating, and conserving
some kind of culture
longevity:
life span: the maximum number of years an individual can live
•approximately 120-125
life expectancy: the number of years the average person born in
a particular year will probably live
•improved with advances in medicine, nutrition, exercise and
lifestyle, alone with a substantial reduction in infant deaths
•the average life expectancy for those born in 2017 in the US
is 79-80 years
•internationally difference due to health conditions and medical
care
•sex differences:
- women outlive men by 5 years usually
- 80% wives outlive husbands
- biological factors- females outlive males
