Design elements and principles Line - made by a moving point in space.One dimensional,varies in width,length,direction Balance - The distribution of visual weight in an artwork or design. achieved through symmetry,asymmetry or a radial balance value - refers to the relative lightness or darkness of a surface. Pattern - repetition of motifs or elements semiotics - study of signs and symbols SIGN - conveys a message;gives a command sign is made of 2 components - Signifier and signified Signifier - Psychical form of a sign. a motion,pattern,sound word,image,gesture.The tangible (real) psychical sign Signified - is the concept,the signifier was referring to. it is not tangible. The signified is basically what the signifier was trying to convey. eg a red light is the signifier and the signified is the message it conveys, which is "do not move" Icon - A sign that psychically resembles what it stands for. Basically it resembles the message it's trying to convey.( it's a type of sign,so conveys a message/command) index - A sign that implies some other object or event. Like a shoe; for a shoe shop symbol - something such as a object,picture,written word.Symbols represent something and have associations with meanings. three components of signified - denotation, connotation, myth denotation - literal meaning of something connotation - an idea or feeling which a person feels when thinking of something. eg: the connotation for teenagers would be naughty,smelly,bad myth - an extended metaphor- stories Insignias - insignias are symbols of power status or office, or of an official body of government or jurisdiction. Examples of these signs of a specific or general authority include heraldry, emblems, badges and flags. so like a government body.
