LMSW Exam (Human Growth and Development) Latest Update Graded A social development enhances a persons mental health, success at work, and ability ti achieve in like tasks. 8 stages of social development Erik Erikson trust V mistrust birth to age 1 = children begin to learn the ability to trust others based upon the consistency of their caregivers. unsuccessful completion of this stage can result in an inability to trust, and therefore a sense of fear about the inconsistent world. autonomy V shame and doubt ages 1-3= children begin to assert their independence by walking away from their mother, picking which toy to play with , and making choices about what they want to wear and eat. if children are criticized, overly controlled, they begin to feel inadequate in their ability to survive and can become overly dependent and lack self esteem and feel a sense of shame. initiative V guilt ages 3-6= children assert themselves more frequently. they begin to plan activities, make up games, and initiate activities with others. if this tendency is hindered- through criticism or control, children develop a sense of guilt- become followers, lacking self-initiative industry V inferiority age 6 to puberty= children begin to develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments. they initiate projects, see through to completion and feel good about their achievements. if this is not encouraged but, is restricted- children begin to feel inferior, doubting their abilities, and failing to reach their potential. identity Vrole confusion adolescence (transition from childhood to adulthood)= MOST IMPORTANT. children are becoming more independent, and begin to look at the future explore their own identities. if hindered, a sense of confusion occurs about themselves and their role in the world. intimacy V isolation young adulthood= individuals begin to share themselves more intimately with others and explore relationships leading toward longer term commitments with others outside of the family. unsuccessful completion of this stage can lead to ; avoiding intimacy and fearing commitment and relationships which can lead to isolation, loneliness and sometimes depression generativity V stagnation middle adulthood= individuals establish careers, settle down within relationships, begin families, and develop a sense of being a part of a bigger picture.
