Comprehensive Outline on Chapter 4, The Classical Period
Understanding Music The Classical Period The classical era refers to the years between 1750 and 1820. During this time, the music transitioned from a baroque style to a classical style. The preclassical period extended from 1730 to 1770, a shift that took place at the same time art was evolving. The term has many meanings. One refers to the Roman and Greek antiquity; another meaning is a lasting appeal. Many people view classical music as music that is not jazz, folk, rock, or pop music. Classical music is a term borrowed from art history by musical historians referring to late 18 th and 19 th -century art influenced by the Romans and Greeks (Kamien, 2018). It emphasizes clarity and balance in the structure, similar to what neoclassical art does. Though the classical period is between 1750 and 1820, classical music flourished from 1770 to 1820.
