Complication of Gender Construction by Race and Class in the 1950s
The socialization of people through different societies over the centuries led to the development of a system of identification of people through all aspect of life including gender, race, social and political classes and ethnicities. The most common identification system that has been around for the longest is the binary system if identifying people through the binary lenses of male and female. These identification groups have come with defining gender roles for each group. This essay focuses on how the issue of gender representation and roles was complicated by class and race in Loraine Hansberry’s, play ‘A Raisin in the Sun’ published in 1959. Black women faced double segregation due to their gender and race. Moreover, lower-class women were segregated further through class and race. Moreover, Lorraine highlights the topic of the role of the man in the family and masculinity.
