Discuss the development of Environmental Education nationally in
SA as well as internationally (20)
Internationally, in the 19th century, the world was quickly engulfed by mass production,
wastage, terrible health conditions, social ills and environmental destruction.
In the 20th century came World War Two 1935 – 1945. The decades following World War Two
saw the first international organizations concerned with the environment
the
(1948) IUCN - International Union for the conservation of Nature and Natural Resources
a Primarily Scientific body concerned with world diminishing natural resources
and
(1961) WWF - World Wildlife Fund
To raise funds for wildlife conservation
formed.
However the most fruitful partnership was the one with
(1946) Unesco - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
Initially concerned with education in developmental context by gradually through
contact with IUCN became part of the process of developing Environmental Education
. These three organizations helped to introduce the concept of “environmental education”. This
was the time when many of the concerns of “developing countries” were placed on the
international agenda for discussion.
A milestone in the Development of Environmental Education came in
(1972) at the United Nations conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm
Rich and poor nations came together to discuss matter of the Environment
