Reproductive processes • Individuals males + females • Individuals changing their sex in their lifetime. • Animals that can fertilize their eggs. • Reproduction without any form of sex. Nature of the Reproductive Process • Two modes recognised –Asexual – • Involves only one parent • No special reproductive organs or cells • Genetically identical offspring are produced • Widespread in bacteria, unicellular eukaryotes and many invertebrate phyla • Ensures rapid increase in numbers Nature of the Reproductive Process • Two modes recognised –Sexual – –Generally involves two parents –Special germ cells unite to form a zygote –Sexual reproduction recombines parental characters.
