2 Lesson Questions Chapter 1-4
Answer these questions from Ch 2 L 4 and review Ch 2 Lessons 1-4 for the Ch 2 Summative Test:
1. What new political ideas defined the American republic? Include information about new state
constitutions, individual rights, voting rights, and freedom of religion.
The power should come from the people, who have the right to vote. The republican ideas after the war
were a bit different. The right to vote was only given to white men, who have property (in most states),
excluded from voting were women, black people (even free ones), and in general people without property
(in most states). Many feared a democracy, because of the majority's power. That's how the separation of
power established (John Adams) executive, judicial, legislative. States also created their own laws, which
is why slavery was legal in some states and illegal in others. The state of Virginia for example established
their constitution to give free Virginians freedom of speech and religion as well as the right to bear arms
and the right to trial by jury. It also barred the state from searching homes without a warrant or taking
property without proper court proceedings. The freedom of religion was established and got rid of the tax
for the anglican church.
2. How did life change for women, African Americans, Native Americans, and Loyalists after the war?
Many of the northern states ended slavery, but most of the southern states kept it. Black people, who
served in the continental army were promised freedom, which is why there were a lot of free black people
after the war. In some states freedom was a law, which is why some people went to court to get their
freedom. The majority of black people in the US were still enslaved, even though around 10000 slaves
obtained their freedom. Women played an important role in the war, which is why they were given more
access to education and an easy way to get a divorce. Around 100000 Loyalists fled to northern america
and parts of today's canada.
3. Describe how a new American culture emerged. How did Americans separate themselves from the
British? Give examples from history, art, and education.

There were some painters like Charles Willson Peale, who served in the continental army and was
famous for his paintings of Washington
