Grade 10
June Exam_2025
Resources: WCED REVISION BOOKLET 2024 TERM 2. @IMPAQ JUN 2020, @IMPAQ JUN 2021 and @IMPAQ JUN 2022.

This information/answers are from the memorandum (there are more possible answers).
Some information is repeated - I want to show you the different ways in which the same
information is asked. I encourage you to answer the calculation/illustration questions.

NOTE: You must study term 1 & 2 notes for the June exam. If you have not purchased
term 1’s notes, contact

Good luck: Juffrou Ansie

Plant tissues Meristematic tissue is actively dividing tissue in which new
cells are formed by mitosis. The cells are not differentiated to
perform a specific function.

Permanent tissue is already differentiated to perform a specific
function and includes xylem, phloem, parenchyma,
collenchyma, sclerenchyma and epidermis.

Parenchyma The most common type of tissue in plants.
Sclerenchyma The walls of this plant tissue are hard and thickened.
Colloidal solution The particles of this solution are too large to float, but too light to
sink.

Cuticle The waxy part of the leaf that reduces transpiration.
Vacuole Provides firmness to the plant by turgor pressure.
Golgi apparatus Plays a role in the formation of lysosomes.
Diffusion
Factors that will
influence the tempo
of this process:

• Concentration
gradient
• Temperature
• Pressure

Epidermis The tissue in roots that gives rise to root hairs is the epidermis

Meristematic tissue
Apical meristem is found near the tips of roots and stems and
are responsible for growth in length.

Lateral meristem is found between the xylem and phloem in a
dicotelydonous plant, and it makes the plant grows thicker.

Foramen magnum Opening in the skull through which the spinal cord enters the
vertebral column.
Adult stem cells in These stem cells develop into different types of blood cells,
bone marrow others back to bone, cartilage, fat, muscle or the endothelium of
blood vessels
Sheep: The first cloned mammal’s type.

The guard cell of the stomata contains chloroplasts that can
photosynthesize

The function of the Stomata is responsible for gaseous exchange / transpiration
stomata

Methods of cloning in • Vegetative parts of the plant are used to make cuttings.
plants • Some plants use specific vegetative reproductive organs,
such as a potato tuber.
• With tissue culture, meristematic tissue (buds) is placed
on a growth medium.
Mitosis The type of cell division where one parent cell divides to form
two identical daughter cells; chromosome number remains the
same
Mitosis is very important for:
Growth of organisms
Repair of damaged tissues
Replacement of worn-out tissues
Reproduction of unicellular organisms
Prophase During this phase of Mitosis does the nucleolus and nuclear
membrane start to disappear
LABELS:
(a) Nucleolus
(b) Nuclear membrane
(c) Nucleoplasm
(d) Chromosome
Interphase The phase in the cell cycle during which cell growth occurs
Telophase Two identical daughter cells formed / cytokinesis takes place

Anaphase Chromatids move apart to opposite poles

LABELS:
(a) spindle fibre/ spindle thread
(b) centromere
(c) chromatid
The behaviour of Chromatids of each chromosome separate and are pulled to
chromosomes during opposite poles of the cell
Anapha of Mitosis
Turgor pressure The pressure exerted by the cell contents on the plant cell wall

Trichome Unicellular or multicellular growths from the epidermal layer of
the leaf.
Metaphase Chromosomes arrange at the equator
Chromatin network A tangled network of DNA and protein located within the
nucleus

Chromosome Thread-like structures that carry genetic information in the form
of genes; made up of 2 chromatids, joined by a centromere
Chromatids The individual strands of a chromosome
Centromere The structure that joins two chromatids of a chromosom
Centrosome/centriole The structures in animal cells that give rise to spindle fibres
during cell division
Cytokinesis The division of the cytoplasm of a cell during cell division
Chemotheraphy The use of chemicals to treat cancer
Spindle fibres The structures formed by the centrioles during cell division
Cancer Diseases caused by abnormal and
uncontrolled cell division.
Precautions that need - Be careful not to burn when working with a heat source /
to be considered wear gloves and a mask
when doing a food - Heat the water bath slowly to prevent spurting of warm
test using Millon’s liquid
reagent / Biuret’s - Use test tube clamps to hold the warm test tubes
test. - Make sure the test tubes are showing away from the face
when it is heated in water bath
With a thin cuticle The leaf that is most likely to lose water at the highest rate
Capillarity The tendency of fluids to move up in narrow tubes is called
capillarity. A plant wilts when water loss exceeds water
absorption.
Guttation The excretion of water droplets through the pores of leaves of a
plant as a result of root pressure and an atmosphere of high
humidity
Root hairs Outgrowths of epidermal cells in roots of plants
Stoma A outgrowths of the epidermal tissue.

Vitamin K This vitamin plays a role in the clotting of blood.
Caspary Bands Caspary Bands is found in the pericycle of the root.
Annual rings The life story of a tree can be read through this.

The representation of a tree’s cross section (left) shows the age
of a tree =
12 years
