Empowerment is when you give a person an opportunity to be in control of their
life.
Service users can be empowered by:
Adapting activities and environments:
Changing the environment. Adapting means changing specific things like activities
for the service user to participate e.g. Aida has an impartial sight which makes
thing blurry for her to see so for her to read books get her an audio book.
Environments mean changing specific needs in an environment for the service
user.e.g. If the service user has hearing impairment you can dim the lights to make
it easier for the service user to lip read. It is important to make specific changes as
you are there to support the service user. The user can move around so they can
feel empowered. By moving things around there is more space for her to move.

a range of activities will enable them to feel accepted and that their opinions are
being valued they will have more confident.
Taking individual rights, preferences and needs into account:
Rights need to be met so that the service user feels as if they have meaning and
their opinion is well valued. The basic needs are things such as bathing, eating,
sleeping, medical and education. Rights are met by being respected by the service
provider for example Aida is Muslim and she eats halal food so you should provide
her with what she needs and don’t always get her the same food ask her what she
would like every day so it’s not always the same. Also she asks for a female carer
because she’s feels uncomfortable with male carers.
Working in partnership with other people:
Working in partnership with different groups of professionals showing respect for
others opinions and accepting help when needed. Service providers need to work
together to help service users because if a service user has cancer they will need a
